Madie W. Barret
After 47 years in New Hampshire, Dr. Barrett retained the graceful accent of her Alabama home. She created the Foreign Language Department in 1956, and for 25 years guided the department while teaching French, Spanish, linguistics and foreign language pedagogy. In 1981, she became Dean of the College, later serving as interim president. "My years at Plymouth were very special to me. … I've reached a point in my life where I'm putting together my estate plan, and I'm making Plymouth a part of that. I've already started by making a gift to set up a pooled income fund. The proceeds of that fund will eventually be joined with a scholarship endowment to benefit foreign language students," said Madie. "It gives me great pleasure to have the capacity to do this for Plymouth State, and it will connect me forever with the institution. Now, that's a legacy." Madie passed away on January 28, 2005. Her plans for a foreign language endowment have been fulfilled with the "Madie Barrett Scholarship Endowment" for the institution that meant so much to her during her life.

Development Scholarship Opportunities
William S. Belvin Scholarship Endowment
This endowment fund provides an annual scholarship for tuition and fees to one undergraduate student enrolled in a full time degree granting program, who has demonstrated the capacity to succeed at Plymouth State University, has maintained a GPA of 3.2 over at least three semesters, and has a need for financial assistance that is incremental to their own contributions toward the cost of their University education. Preference may be given to students who are the first in their family to seek a baccalaureate degree. Interested students can apply through the Development Office in Russell House.
Harold E. Hyde Endowed Scholarship
The purpose of this endowed fund is to provide a scholarship to a student who demonstrates a strong record of academic achievement. Criteria includes an exemplary record of leadership and service, and a commitment to activities whose purpose is to further the cause of international understanding. The endowment also has an interest in students majoring in education administration, though this is not a requirement for eligibility. Interested students can apply through the Development Office in Russell House.
Imagine A Way Scholarship Endowment
The purpose of the Imagine A Way Scholarship Endowment is to support scholarships for students who have financial need or who may be among the first generation in their family to attend college. Interested students can apply through the Development Office in Russell House.
Ann L. Wharton Scholarship Fund
The Ann L. Wharton Scholarship should be awarded, preferably at Spring Convocation, to a student who is completing his or her junior year and will be returning to PSU for his/her senior year of study. The scholarship should be used to offset tuition costs incurred during the senior year. A full year of study remaining is preferred in order to be considered for this award. The award should support a student who has demonstrated superior academic performance after overcoming a substantive obstacle or personal challenge. Such obstacles or challenges include, but are not limited to initial academic disappointment or failure; a physical challenge; or financial or economic obstacles. In each case, recipients should have demonstrated in their lives and college careers those qualities exemplified by Ann L. Wharton: courage, hard work, persistence, and generosity to others. In February departments are notified of the scholarship and are requested to make nominations. Interviews are conducted by the committee and the selection for the award is finalized in April. Interested students can apply through the Development Office in Russell House.
