student in meeting

Kenny Bresette ’14 wants to share his success with students at Plymouth State—and set them up for their own successful futures, too.

Now a manager at a Fortune 500 company, Kenny credits his achievements to the business-savvy experience he gained as a student leader in the Marketing Association at Plymouth State (MAPS).

MAPS, part of the American Marketing Association (AMA), is a student club that includes business majors of all types from sales to human resources. Each year, students submit an action plan for their business goals for the school year. Fundraising, community service, marketing, and execution come together to help students examine all aspects of a business plan.

“MAPS brought me real-world experience and helped me understand how business works,” Kenny says. “It’s all about a plan: you start the year with this plan and initiatives, then follow through and examine what works and what doesn’t work.”

Every year, 350 schools in the AMA submit their business projects and enter a national competition. During Kenny’s time in MAPS, Plymouth State rose from a group of 25 students that finished 349th in the competition to over 120 students finishing 18th.

“I came out on top right out of school because of the MAPS program,” says Kenny. “Managing over 100 people, bringing up our ranking, building work ethic—to be able to demonstrate that in an interview was why I was successful. ”Not only did I get the educational experience I needed in business, but MAPS gave me an opportunity to make friends, have fun, and connect so personally with professors and students—you just don’t get that at a bigger school,” Kenny recalls fondly. “That’s what brought me to where I am today.”

Kenny acknowledges that school is expensive and that a scholarship can truly change a student’s life. Recently, he turned his donations into the MAPS Alumni Annual Scholarship, which will be awarded to an undergraduate MAPS student for the first time this fall.

“If I can help put a smart, capable student into a position to win, and get hired by someone like me, that’s what Plymouth State is all about,” Kenny says.
