Grace Thomas Guptill received cards from Taschia Platek Dunlap and Hester Small Ames, who heard from Marion Kelley Merrill and Marjorie Fogg Ober. Hester and Amesy are well and participated in the Audubon Bird Count in February. Grace hopes that some of us will be able to get together soon. Taschia’s winter was highlighted with visits from family members from Alaska, California, Spokane, Boston and Tacoma where Joe is vice president for instruction at Clover Park Technical College. She spent Palm Sunday with her daughter, Brenda, and husband in Cardiff-By-The-Sea where both sang in a cantata, Then Came Sunday. She has been working in her flower garden and walks half a mile daily to pick up her mail. A note from Dorothy Pierce Main tells me that she and her husband are still busy with their 200-year-old home. Their 65th wedding anniversary was to be celebrated in May with an open house. She visits with Betty Beal Parker. They would like to hear from classmates. Grace is well and enjoying her birds, chipmunks, squirrels and especially her two great grandsons. Hester and Grace look forward to hearing from other classmates.

The class of ’44 held its annual reunion at Lucille Nutting Gilman’s cottage in Meredith, N.H., on July 8, 2003. In attendance were Marion Richardson Pounder, Barbara Currier Kelley, Leah A. Gray, Laura Pike DeGoosh, Ruth Dolby Young, Joyce Breck Young and Patricia Dubeau Harlow. Following an enjoyable social time, a discussion was held regarding plans for our 60th reunion. We agreed to make a special effort to attend Alumni Day to present our gift, the plans for which are under way. Leah shared that the land given to the town of Campton is in the process of being developed by the Conservation Corps. She was looking forward to a visit from her longtime pen pal from Holland. Joyce Young has had surgery on both knees and is doing well. Ruth Young and her husband recently returned from a trip to the Amish Country in Pennsylvania. Barbara Kelley has written a history of the Center Harbor Women’s Club and stays active in the Moultonborough and Center Harbor historical societies. Laura DeGoosh still substitutes and recently visited the Von Trapp family estate in Stowe, Vt. Lou Gilman and her husband are busy visiting their children and wintering in Florida. Their daughter, Pat, was with us during the day. Lou sees Shirley Sullivan Finnigan, who has retired to Florida. In July, Marion Pounder and Patricia Harlow visited the historic sites around Portsmouth, N.H., and picnicked on the waterside at Rye State Park. Fernande Stanford and Jean Bolton Landroche were unable to join us, but we hope they’ll be with us next time.

On August 5, 2003 the class of ’46 met at the Cat and Fiddle. Those present were Bette Bracett Webber, Virginia M. Hallisey, Ruth Gilman Bolduc, Gertrude Brown Barron, Marion Lucy Warren, Elsie Railton Rushton, Virginia Deachman Dearborn, Pauline Tillotson Cole, Barbara H. Patch, Beverly Wilmot Shaw, Cynthia Philbrook Harmon, Rosamond Batchelder Hingston, Marion Joslyn Foster, Daisy Peirce Hale, and yours truly, Drina Perkins Blanchette. A great time was had by all and we had a most enjoyable meal. Many thanks to Bette Webber and Virginia Hallisey for making all the arrangements. Needless to say, we were extremely happy to have Bette with us after all she had been through. Thanks go out to her special family and friends for their prayers and messages. Pauline Cole is happy that all her grandchildren have finished or are attending college. Good for them. She and her daughter had a wonderful trip to Tuscany. She’s quite the traveler. Daisy Hale keeps busy in her own way. That’s Daisy! Dorothy Libby could not attend as she had obligations to help with the Pythian Senior Lunch program for the day. She celebrated her 80th birthday with a party. She doesn’t believe in “sweating the small stuff.” I agree. Barbara Gove Pike, having had eye problems, was helped by Dorothy with errands, etc. She is back on track now and doing volunteer work. Ruth Crandall Gallagher couldn’t make it, but sent a note. Hope all is going well. Pauline Warren Clark was on vacation before the meeting, so couldn’t make it this time. Beverly Sanborn Minot is still keeping busy with her work, but did stop in to see Roz Hingston on her way north. Cynthia Harmon and I had a nice luncheon with Betty Tennyson and her husband; it was good to see them. Phyliss Gordon Miller and her husband have bought another house in Florida. They’re hoping that this is the one. I got a note from Elvis Braley Belser a while back and expected to see her, but she didn’t make the meeting. Hope all is well. Ruth Bolduc keeps in touch with Pauline Wade Merrill who recently had cataracts removed. Virginia Dearborn visits children and grandchildren in North Carolina as often as she can. Beverly Shaw spent some time in Maine with family. She evidently took some time from all her other ventures. Marion Foster hadn’t been to a reunion for awhile, so it was good to see her. She and hubby like their new living quarters, and they keep busy with their four children. Thank you, Marion Warren, for keeping us all informed on various things and all your most welcome calls.

The old Reunion Committee is still alive and kicking, but now more as a social group than a working group (although we were always a social group at heart). Fifteen went to Kay and Steve J. Tassey’s house in Shelburne, N.H., on October 25. Most went up on the night before and stayed in motels near the Tasseys’ home. They took the Tasseys out to supper in Gorham at a restaurant with a chef who worked with Julia Child. The next day, Steve tried to duplicate the elegance by preparing lunch for everyone at his house. He succeeded—with much help from Kay. Those attending were Eileen Parent Clark, Harold H. Matava and Barbara Hoyt Matava ’50, Dorothy Goode Kaffel, Maybeth Paris Oberti, Peter Brown and Kathy Chapman, Jacqueline Richardson Spear, Martha Head Wade and Dave O. Wade ’50, Jean Dodge Saltmarsh ’50, Daisy Hussey Day and Bob Payne. Steve and Kay operate a gardening center with four greenhouses where they raise tomatoes for sale to retailers and restaurants of the Julia Child level of proficiency. Plans are under way for a similar gathering at the Wilsons’ house in the spring. Jean Baker Pollock regrets having missed our 50th Reunion, but her husband Joe’s illness has kept her close to home. They live in Wilton, N.H., and enjoy trips to Maine in the summer, especially seeing the displays of antique trucks at the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum. Ida Jones Wheeler has relegated most of the gardening that she used to do to her husband, Edward. Still living in Danville, Vt., she is hard at work researching and writing her family’s genealogy. She has two daughters, one in Alabama and one next door. Her two grandsons are a senior in high school and a senior in college. If you head west along Route 2 from Danville, all the way across the state of Vermont to South Burlington, you will be able to visit Joyce Hawthorne Spooner. Many years ago, she left teaching to have two children. She tragically lost her daughter, but her son grew up to attend a New Hampshire vocational technical school. Joyce has since divorced and now has a happy, spiritual relationship with her companion, Joe, a former Catholic priest and missionary. Because of a mild case of scoliosis, Joyce has had to give up cross country skiing but continues to be active in church work. The Reunion Committee urges all class members to make contributions to the PSU annual fund and to make your donation payable to the Class of ’52 Endowment Fund. We have raised over $13,000 for scholarships.

On a beautiful sunny day, Janet Stewart Knowles ’54 and I (Lorraine Avery Johnstone) drove to Jaffrey to see Barbara Spaulding Woodbury. She is doing well after her second knee replacement and has even gone back to driving, a red Trans Am! I saw Arlene Parent Welch at two retired teachers’ meetings. She is well and plans to again spend the winter in California. My husband, John, and I had a wonderful trip to Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea. The highlight was two days spent at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. We were also impressed by the shipyard in Gdansk, where Solidarity members gave their lives for the breakdown of communism and the rise of freedom. Elwin E. Bourey and Alfa Bowers Bourey ’54 came to visit when they were east. They have been busy enjoying their grandsons and sports. They were looking forward to a river cruise and a trip to Key West in the spring to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Many of us will celebrate our 50th in 2004. An early congratulations to us all!

What fun it was for our Reunion Committee to get together to plan contacting 1958 alumni, and more fun calling you folks to get reacquainted while requesting your financial support for our 50th anniversary gift to Plymouth! We are gratified by your response. If you were initially hesitant but now decide you want to help, contact any of us or PSU. Designate your contribution specifically to the Class of 1958 Boyd Hall Fundraiser. The great thing about getting together as a committee was finding out how enthusiastic and vital we all still are. Many of us still work, full or part time, and we’re serving on boards and committees, volunteering and traveling all over the globe! Eugene A. Savage served 26 years at UNH in various capacities, and before retirement was vice chancellor of the University System of New Hampshire. He is now the PSU representative on the USNH board of trustees, and for the last few years has enjoyed being senior government relations counselor for a Concord law firm. Gene and his wife, Joan Doyon Savage ’56, spend the winters in Florida. Lorraine and Richard P. Truchon live in Hampton and are world travelers. During a recent trip to the U.K. they exchanged homes with a couple in Wales and hope to repeat that experience elsewhere. Their daughter, Michelle Truchon Croteau ’87, recently completed her master’s degree and is teaching in the same elementary school she once attended. Dick teaches an occasional class at Northern Essex Community College and enjoys organic gardening. Jodie and Peter F. Graham were at our first meeting this summer. Pete is now head of the Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, Fla. He’s suggested that Florida folks might like to get together to renew acquaintance. F. Andre Paquette and his wife, Margaret, live in Lakeport and have three children and eight grandchildren, all living nearby. Andre retired after serving 12 years as superintendent of Mascoma Regional School District. They’ve traveled through nine European countries and plan to continue. Both enjoy playing golf. Andre is on the Belknap County Commission on Children and Families and provides community service in other capacities as well. More news about committee members next time. After that, I’ll be depending on you to drop a note and let me share your news with old friends.

Our sincere sympathy to Nancy Brown Barrett. We were saddened to hear of the passing of her husband John D. Barrett. Deborah Sargent Allan and her husband, Thain, spent three weeks in London and Ireland. They attended a wedding in Ireland and played golf at Druid’s Glen in Wicklow. Debbie says, “We drove everywhere and only managed to swipe off one side view mirror and mangle one hubcap!” Since returning, Debbie has achieved her first hole in one! Bette Tirrell DeRocher vacationed in Alaska, Gail Walsh Barker traveled to Nova Scotia and Kathleen Anderson Nelson spent two weeks touring Scandinavia with the Keene Singers.

Dorothy Donigian Nazarian would like to remind you to be sure to check out our class of 1962 Web page at www.alumni.plymouth.edu for immediate updates of coming events of the 50th Reunion Gift Committee. Members of the class of ’62, please share your news with class agent William “Bill” Andrews, by e-mail or through the alumni office. We want to hear from you. Bill and Sharon Langlois Andrews celebrated their 42nd anniversary in August. We have three children and their spouses. Paul lives in Oregon, Bill Jr. in Colorado and Kathy in Peterborough, N.H. We also have four terrific grandchildren. Bill is still working and Sharon continues to keep busy with church activities. Bill is a team leader with the People to People Student Ambassador program. He spent two weeks in the Grand Canyon with over 30 students and will be headed to Australia with more than 40 students next summer. It has been great to have been in touch with so many classmates during these past couple of years. Gene F. Stearns and Roberta Wallace Stearns ’61 have retired to Northwood, Roberta’s home town. Roberta continues as a trustee at Coe Brown. Paul T. Cullen ’63 and Barbara Dyer Cullen celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on April 29. Joining them were their four children, Brian, Diane, Tom and Anne Elizabeth along with spouses and three grandchildren, Kally (10), Tyler (8) and Melissa (7). In September, Paul and Barbie spent two weeks in Ireland and Northern Ireland, a fabulous trip highlighted with stays at B & Bs, traveling over 1,000 miles and some absolutely beautiful sights (Barbie is also co-agent for our class). Rita LaPlante Norander and Robert celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary a little early in June (actual date August 24) with a trip out west which included tours of Zion, Bryce Canyon Dam, the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Ariz., and Las Vegas. Claira Pirozzi Monier, still working for four more years at New Hampshire Housing, enjoyed traveling to family in Calcutta in December and Poland in July. “My Italian relatives are scheduled for a visit next year. I am planning a retirement of tennis, gardening and travel.” Wally and Meredith Bristow Stevens had their 40th anniversary in November. They have two sons living in California, and one in New Hampshire, as well as four grandchildren. They are in retirement planning mode! Meredith is active as a library trustee in Weston, Mass., focusing on arts and music programs for the community. Wally is still a fishmonger with mentoring of future fishmongers as his principal activity. Wally says, “Come back to PSU—it’s quite phenomenal!” P.S. Wally, find your son’s car yet? David and Martha Filgate Towle will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary in December. Lee and Maurice Stebbins are retired and living in Bethlehem. They visit Phoenix regularly where their two youngest daughters and four grandchildren live. As for me, your co-agent, Dorothy Donigian Nazarian, we sold our home in Nottingham and moved back to the old homestead with my mom. One piece of advice, guys—learn to love change! Ara is semi-retired, working with our two sons to establish an online jewelry site, and still serving jewelry clients as needed. Right now I am working at Mann Orchards in Methuen making fruit and gourmet baskets three days a week, while working to expand our online business. And of course, love to spend time with our grandbabies, all seven, with number eight due in November. We celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary in June, have four grown children, Kevin, Julie, Kenneth and Kristen, all of whom are now married to absolutely grand spouses, so we are truly blessed. ONE MORE NOTE: Missed those of you who could not make the train ride that Hon. Raymond S. Burton has had for years, and was gracious enough to set up for our class, with John Clements, the owner of the genuine Pullman car we rode in. It was an absolutely perfect day and approximately 30 of our classmates and families enjoyed the fellowship, conversation, stops along the way and the lunch at the Plymouth Regional Senior Center (in the renovated train station), where we were superbly entertained by the PSU Jazz Combo. We all agreed that this would be a great annual gathering since the leisurely ride enabled us to really visit and get reacquainted. Please, if you have an e-mail, send it along to me or Barbara so we can stay in touch. I don’t know about you, but for me, my college years at Plymouth were some of the best years of my life—some of the most lasting relationships were begun there and they become sweeter year by year. Thanks all for your contributions and especially to Bill and Sharon Andrews for their persistent help! Love you guys, Dottie, (for Barbie, too! —oops, sorry Paul, I mean Barbara).

Jean Adams Ricker, Judith Trombley Beauregard, Martha Shay Steele, Nancy Brown Koslosky and Eleanor Morehouse Loesch, got together for lunch in June at Nancy’s home in Concord, Mass. They enjoyed catching up on each other’s news and reminiscing about Plymouth State friends and times shared. Jean is retiring from her secretarial job in a Century 21 real estate office and is considering getting back into sales part time. She is enjoying time with her grandchildren and quilting. Judy is enjoying the joys and challenges of therapeutic foster care. Martha is still teaching in Florida and on the college search with her youngest son, Brian. Nancy retired from teaching in 2001 and is doing some substitute work and enjoying time with her family. Eleanor also retired from teaching in 2001, does some volunteer work and is busy with “parent care.” As you can imagine, we had a wonderful time and promised ourselves not to make it so long between visits. We were missing a few people and hope they can be included in future visits.
