Taschia Platek Dunlap is busy with studying the Apocrypha, membership in Delta Kappa Gamma Club and retired teachers’ meetings. She participates in Kid’s Place, a volunteer service she helped organize eight years ago that provides a place for parents with child custody issues to visit their children. Dorothy Pierce Main is still antiquing. Her husband has a heart condition, so they have had to curtail their activities a bit. She played the organ in church at Christmas—a duet with piano. Hester Small Ames and Amesy keep busy with home, gardens and wild life. Grace Thomas Guptill and Hester hope to meet soon for lunch. Grace is busy with home, family and friends. She would like to have news from classmates for the magazine.

For our 60th reunion, members of the class of ’44 met on campus for a special homecoming. Attending were: Laura Pike DeGoosh, Lucille Nutting Gilman, Leah Gray, A. Patricia Dubeau Harlow, Barbara Currier Kelley, Jean Bolton Landroche, June Ryan Lewis, Marion Richardson Pounder, Ruth Dolby Young and Joyce Breck Young. Fernande Stanford and Beverly Moffett had planned to attend but fate deemed otherwise. Some people took advantage of the campus tour while the rest chatted at the HUB. After lunch and the award ceremony, we adjourned to the home of Dr. Henry Vittum ’48. (Our class gift, a granite bench and horse chestnut were put in place in August. We had a brief dedication followed by lunch and a boat trip on Squam.) We were especially pleased with our souvenir booklet and class picture. Lucille Nutting Gilman and her family are on their way to France for a WWII tour of northern France. They will visit areas of special significance and share memories with Patricia and Warren, their children. Leah Gray is active as a volunteer and is taking courses at the new Concord Community Center. Ruth Dolby Young is supervisor of the checklist plus other activities in Rumney, N.H. Barbara Currier Kelley has visited in Florida and contributes to the Moultonborough Historical Society. Laura Pike DeGoosh is really enthusiastic about her Elderhostel trips to Virginia and Arizona. Jean Bolton Landroche vacationed in Ogunquit, Maine, with her family. Barbara Thurston Simpson moved from Florida to South Carolina, to live with her daughter. Fernande Stanford was to have hip surgery at the end of July. She recently moved to new housing. June Ryan Lewis and husband, John, came from New Jersey. Because of Motorcycle Week they were housed in West Lebanon. It was June’s first trip back and it made the time seem special for all of us. Marion Richardson Pounder and I recently attended an art exhibit at the Audubon Center on Massabesic Lake. A. Patricia Dubeau Harlow is off to China and Tibet very soon—more later!

John and Sibi Davis Rhodes have moved to Lexington, S.C., into a lovely new home and new neighborhood, to be near their son, Dusty. They are enjoying their new surroundings but are just a little bit nostalgic for New England! Ruth Matthews O’Leary sold her winter home in Florida and returned to familiar territory near family. She has a lovely new condo in Dover and is happy as a clam! Sylvia Albany Turmelle also left Florida to return to Colchester, Vt., near relatives and friends. Zoe Head Swift and husband Frank drove to Tulsa in May to visit their son in the Air Force. Then back to Cape Elizabeth for a grand-daughter’s graduation and a big family reunion. Zoe keeps busy making baby afghans for newborns at Maine Medical Center. Helen Brown Pappas is still living in an “old farmhouse” on several acres in central Alabama with her burro and four dogs! Her youngest daughter (an RN) lives on the acreage and her other daughter and son only a few miles away. Harriet Kelley is still living in Concord and doing well. As for me (Beatrice Jennings Salywon), I love my adopted city of Tucson, and Arizona, but will always love New England. My daughter and family live in Las Vegas and my son in Phoenix, so I may go to be near one of them. Meanwhile, I love company! Come on down! And please send me news for the next publication! Adios!

The 1951 scholarship committee is pleased to announce that the Class of 1951 Scholarship Endowment Fund, established in honor of our 50th reunion, has reached its financial goal. The first annual distribution for the scholarship will begin in 2005. Helen Laplante Duchesne lives on Newfound Lake in Bristol, N.H. She lost her husband of over 50 years, Robert S. Duchesne ’59, in December 2003. She says their seven children and 12 grandchildren helped her go forward. She taught for 12 years before and after their children were born, and retired in 1991. She enjoys writing, especially poetry, and belongs to a writers’ group. Helen has had two books published. The first is a family memoir, In Their Time. The second is an oral history, Echoes from the Mills, for which she researched and interviewed former workers of Stevens Mill, one of the last operating mills in Franklin, N.H., where Helen’s father was employed before she was born. Doris Harrigan Mosher’s family includes husband, Alton, three daughters, two sons-in-law, three granddaughters and one grandson. Granddaughter Amy is a junior at PSU and on the swim team. Grandson Christopher is a freshman at UNH. Doris taught for 28 years (23 in Salem, N.H.), and retired in 1998. After their retirement, Doris and Alton invested in a Winnebago and traveled for three months to Alaska via the Alcan Highway and toward the Yukon. They observed beautiful scenery and many wild animals, and panned for gold. They visited Denali National Park and reached the top of Mt. Denali. Rita Blaney Guarino and her husband, Anthony Guarino Jr. ’50, have five children and 10 grandchildren from five to 21 years old. Rita taught for 16 years in Exeter, N.H., and retired in 1984 in order to help Tony with his second career, in sales, as his office manager. He had been a sports coach and director of PE for 29 years. They both retired again in 1991. Rita has written a novel, The One-Eyed Dragon, which will be published in the fall of 2004. Tony reversed roles to become her business manager. Some of the grandchildren chuckle at her premise, since the main character attempts to prohibit television reception from her fictional community. Also helping in this project is classmate Helen Duchesne, who has been an invaluable mentor and is guiding this first-time author through the perils of self-publishing.

Many of our classmates are avid golfers. Alan Rich plays nearly every day, participates in tournaments in and around his year-round residence in Sun City Center, Fla. He and Joan Carlin Rich ’49 travel to North Carolina once a year so Alan can participate in a seniors tournament. Al says his competitiveness is not as sharp as it used to be as he pits his skills against 50 year olds. Joan is active in community center activities. Together, they travel to nearby museums such as the Science Museum and Busch Gardens. During the 14 years they have lived in Sun City Center, they have watched the city grow from about 6,000 people to over 16,000. They visited New Hampshire this summer when Al attended the 50th reunion of his former Haverhill Academy students. I mentioned this to Ellen Swan Morin. “Oh yeah,” she said. “My father hired him!” Her father was chairman of the Board of Education when Al applied for a teaching position. Not only the men are avid golfers; Ellen plays weekly. And, if that isn’t enough, she maintains a large lawn around her house. She also owns a house in Sarasota and vacations there for a few weeks during the winter. She visits with Ralph Fabisiak and his wife, Olive, in Ft. Meyers, and John Currier and his wife, Shirley, in Bradenton. She recently returned from Burlington, Vt., after a visit with her brother. She hopes to attend the mini-reunion at Dottie Goode Kaffel’s house on Lake Winnipesauke in August. Delma Harrison O’Malley has been ill for a long time but is beginning to feel better. A few of her five children live nearby but the rest are spread out between Florida and California. Delma would like to hear from classmates. Her address is 5115 Jeanine Court, Orlando FL 32807-1366.

Fifty has a very nice connotation to me (Jet Temperley Jennings), it looks great in my wallet when I leave the house, it is crisp, colorful and very handy. The class of 1954 is quite similar, as I saw at the Alumni Day events on June 19. The open meeting of the Alumni Board opened my eyes further to PSUAA’s many recent successes as well as the hurdles and vision. Thelma “Hug” Huggins McManus smiled and laughed continually from her wheel chair, husband Red at her side. Hug told about her multiple operations, her new knees and new hips. She has ongoing therapy and is “generally feeling better.” Hug’s courage and good outlook is very contagious. Janet Stewart Knowles talked of her sister, travels to Canada and concerns for both Lorraine Avery Johnstone ’55 and Shirley Dutton Babb, whom we both missed. Lorraine was laid low with back and leg problems and Shirley had a family reunion. Ken Randall, still a bit quiet, said he was semi-retired. He mentioned that he is a purser on the Mt. Washington. He looked very fit. Ken and his wife, Elaine, live in Tilton, N.H. Marie “Mickey” Flanagan Mongan and her husband have formed an international company called The Hypno-Birthing Program. They travel continually teaching the method and occasionally are home in Avondale, Ariz., while a new summer home is being built in Chichester, N.H. They have 14 grandchildren combined, the youngest is two years old. They were off to London next. I had just returned from England, so we compared notes. Charlotte “Checky” Fowle Kelley and I caught up on the Key Largo neighborhood as we have been neighbors there. She and her hubby, John, still have roots in Warner, N.H., and winter in Homestead, Fla. Also at the gathering at the HUB was Olive “Rusty” Blodgett Lange, now in Laconia, and her spouse, Phillip Lange ’73. Like everyone, she looked great, happy and smiling at being retired. Ellie (Eleanor) Corbett Lyons of Colebrook, N.H., is active with her grandchildren, Eastern Star and Grange. Bill Marston and his wife, Nancy, joined us at the Winnipesauke Room in Prospect Hall for the luncheon. We recalled being Mary and Joseph in the 1953 Christmas Pageant. Bill received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1971 and the Alumni Achievement Award in 1997. In 1982, Marie Flanagan Mongan and, in 1983, Thelma Huggins McManus also received the Alumni Achievement Award. Thanks to them and many others in our class who have continued to contribute to our fine University and its Alumni Association. We missed all who were absent—180 alumni attended. Following the luncheon awards to scholars, alumni and faculty, we had a class picture taken. We didn’t have a trophy to award to the alumnus who came the greatest distance. If we had it would have gone to the lovely Ruth Kelly Williams who came all the way from Bakersfield, Calif. It is interesting that Ruth and Maryann Jewell Lacasse are (sort of) sisters-in-law since Ruth’s child married Maryann’s. Stay crisp, colorful and handy. Keep me posted.

Pearl Pantelakos Collins visited her son and grandchildren in Land O’Lakes, Fla. She is requesting photos which include her from the years 1951 to 1955 in the A Capella Choir, Collegienettes, operetta “Down in the Valley,” as Clara Bow singing at our “nightclub” dance in 1954, or any photos from college days. Her e-mail address is: susiesnooks@yahoo.com and she asks you to identify yourself as a PTC alum. Lorraine Avery Johnstone reminds you that 2005 is the big reunion date. As soon as everything is firmed up, you will hear from me. Thank you, also, for the cards and phone calls, not to mention prayers, as I went through cancer surgery and radiation therapy. As of now, all is well. Al Bourey has finished a series of surgeries. He and Alfa Bowers Bourey ’54 went to Spain for a wedding. They also have a new grandson! Arnie Adams and Edie Grant Adams ’56 are doing well. Arnie is playing his trumpet again after many years, with the Gilford Community Band. We all remember his great band in college and how much fun it was to dance to. Janet Stewart Knowles ’54 and I are planning our annual trip to see Barbara Spaulding Woodbury. She is doing well and still volunteers at her library. Arlene Parent Welch has returned to her beach house in Wells, Maine. Her winter was spent with her daughter in California. Our sympathy goes out to Catherine Shaw McGuigan and her family on the death of her daughter. Our prayers are with you, Taffy. When Dr. Arnold Adams came back to campus to attend the final concert of the year for the PSU Symphonic Band, it brought “a tear to [his] eyes.” He recalled the day when he started the first band at Plymouth State and Mr. Jorgensen, the director, handed him the baton and told him, “It’s up to you now.” Arnold went on to direct the band for the rest of the year as a student director. He sends his sincere compliments to Dr. Corcoran, the current band director, and to the music program at PSU. This is the last call for input on our big 50th reunion in 2005. Give me a call or e-mail.

Sara Aja received the class of ’57 scholarship for 2004. She sent us a nice thank you note. The following news was sent in from Patricia Heath Caswell: Our sympathy to Ellie DiBuono Poulin whose mother passed away at age 94 this last April. On a brighter note, thanks to Ellie’s son and wife, she and Dick have a new grandson who was born in March. They also have a granddaughter, Kathryn (11). Dick and Ellie went to Ottawa in May and enjoyed the Tulip Festival. Bob McCoy and wife Marjorie are on the road again. They made an RV trip to Alaska last summer and spent the winter at their lot in Desert Hot Springs, Calif. He sends an open invitation to his classmates, if they are in Portland, Ore., in the summer or Desert Hot Springs in the winter, to give him a call or e-mail him at realmccoy927@aol.com. Jody Buffum Wilson is finishing her second and last year on the Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury. She and Frank went on a birding trip to Panama, and are making travel plans for November. Tom and Dawn Buckminster Giroux have purchased a house in downtown Bethel, Maine, and hope to move into it by November. Marcia and Harold Peaslee were in the Keene area twice this year. In January they attended a funeral for a family member, and in May visited old friends and neighbors. They are living full time in Ocala, Fla. Carl Gendron and wife Joyce are now living in Wolfeboro. They spent five months at Vero Beach, Fla., last winter. They have kept in contact with the Peaslees in Ocala. Carl and Joyce bought a camper and enjoy camping with the grandchildren. Doris “Deke” Moffitt Delozier retired after 38 years in education. She also lives in Ocala, and writes educational booklets. Her most current one, for ESL and remedial readers in the Marion County Schools, is titled Keep It Simple. AARP published it and distributed it for use throughout the state. Deke was included in the 24th edition of Who’s Who of American Women. She would love to hear from her classmates; e-mail her at dmd2@mindsprings.com. Dick Fagnant and wife Ann spent the worst part of the winter in Naples, Fla., and didn’t miss our New England cold! They planned to spend a week or so in Pemaquid Harbor, Maine, during July, where they have gone since 1977. Dick also reminded me that the class of ’57 treasury is not growing fast with funds for our 50th reunion and we may end up going to Fausty’s! Remember, you can pay in installments to Dick or Norma Huggins Heinz. Dick can be reached at PO Box 5, Woodsville NH 03785 and “Hugga” at 55 Tremont St., Boscawen NH 03303. Tommy Monahan volunteers twice a week at the Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster. During the summer, you can find Tommy at the Great North Woods Welcome Center two or three days a week. He enjoys meeting the traveling public from all over the U.S. and foreign countries. He is also very involved with and proud of his grandchildren, who are involved in sports at the Whitefield School. Tommy enjoyed getting together with Reggie Lacasse and his wife, Maureen, at their 50th reunion from Stratford High School during the summer of 2003.

Jean Routhier O’Shea wrote: As the eighth member of the Reunion/Fund-Raising Committee and your class agent, it’s my turn to share what’s happening in my life. My six grandchildren now range in ages from eight to 14—four girls, two boys. After retiring from teaching at Portsmouth High School, I served a stint as relocation coordinator for a Century 21 franchise, spent a year as house mother for a sorority at UNH, worked part time in the office of a small church in Portsmouth, and now serve as house manager for a small movement theatre in Portsmouth. I try to indulge my love of ballroom dancing at least once a week. I have traveled a bit during the last few years: Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Thailand. I especially enjoyed a European river cruise and visiting towns in countries bordering the Rhine River. Last fall I joined an Elderhostel in Arizona where I studied the geology and peoples of the southern and western section of the Grand Canyon. The trip included a helicopter ride and rafting on the Colorado. I spent a week by myself in Sedona, enjoying an area I had long wished to revisit. In June, I went on a six-day Windjamming vacation from Camden, Maine. We sailed the many islands off the coast. The ship was an original, restored sailing vessel; it held 29 passengers and a crew of five. (No TV, papers, phones, electricity, etc.) Accommodations were primitive and all hands helped with hoisting sails and doing dishes. It was an interesting experience, one that necessitated an ability to laugh! The food was great and the company memorable. I encourage you to be in touch with me either directly or through the alumni office. In this case, no news is not good news. Please drop a line so I’ll have something to share with classmates. (Update: So far, our fundraising efforts have produced more than $19,000! We’re still waiting for you to get on the bandwagon so that we can reach our goal of $25,000. Any amount will be helpful, and a pledge program is available for those who wish to spread out a contribution over the next four years. Won’t you consider helping to provide a memorable 50th reunion class gift in Dr. Boyd’s memory? Thank you.)

Greetings, class of ’64. Finally, notes from your class agent. A great time was had by all who attended our 40th class reunion on June 18–19. We stayed overnight in Mary Lyon Hall. The experience was indescribable. Seems like the rooms shrank since we attended college! And facilities? Down the hall to the right! Those attending included: Lynda and Jack Jablonski, Betty and Paul Grigas, May Hines and Dan Wszolek, Rudy and Wendy Murphy Baumann, Matt Matsis, Bob Nugent, Ellie Blott MacDonald and her husband William, Freda Clark Brown and Zeno Traub, Charles Dube and wife Irene, Paul Breckell, Larry Coffin and his wife Carolyn, Joanne and Wayne Jacoby, Art LaRoche, Charlie Marston, Bev Bordeau Green and myself. Hope I didn’t miss anyone. I received e-mails from Nancy Smith Stephenson, Gwen Stout Urbanik, Donna Stevens Cornelius, and David Minickiello wishing all those in attendance a great time. I hope that we can start planning soon for a 45th and a big bash for our 50th. Several classmates have expressed a desire to stay in touch and bring more of us together to share our life stories. Keep this in mind and e-mail your thoughts to me, beshaw3@aol.com. If you have small groups that get together or have contact with any class members, let me know and maybe we can plan some regional gatherings in the coming months. Jay and Pay Cummings Scholfield, have now both retired from teaching physical education on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. Jay has started a new service writing and publishing people’s life stories (memoirs-matter.com) and was inducted into the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Ned will drive and Patricia will work in the golf shop. Their jobs ended in September, when they headed to Atlanta, Ga., to meet their new grandchild. Dr. Judy A. Wilder is academic dean at Hesser College in Manchester, N.H. Bruce “Bean” Connery (after 12 years of teaching high school music and retiring from a 20-year career as director of EMS for the town of Stratford, Conn.) has returned to teaching for Future Musicians, Inc., based in New Jersey, teaching individual music lessons at private schools in Connecticut. Skip Whitmore is retiring for the second time in two years—this time for real. He still plays in a band. Jim Poirier, with wife Linda, believes we should rally for one of Skip’s gigs. Jim is still teaching computer science at Pinkerton Academy. Bob Skinner and Crystal Lowe Skinner ’71 are staying on the go. The TKE guys have been rallying each winter for a ski trip and starting this spring, will hit the golf course. Sherwood Fluery and Jackie Fluery ’78 have come back to the North Country (Franconia) from the Cape. Sherwood is being a “semi retired superintendent.” Dale Woodward and wife Bonnie celebrated the arrival of their third grandchild (all of them girls), with a fourth expected in November. Donna Gould Keazer is an RN. She winters in Florida and summers in New Hampshire. Fred Bailey is also semi retired and works with Sherwood. Bob Peacock came in from Oregon; he arrived later in the day and just casually walked up. Well, that’s the way Bob’s been living, a part-time ski instructor and relaxed. Joan Cook came from the Maine coast. It was interesting to learn that after student teaching she decided that teaching wasn’t for her. Joan has joined the Heritage Society at PSU, leaving a legacy for others. My wife, Lee Richman Nelson ’72, and I are in Virginia, our daughters are both in Chicago. We have remained very active in the community. It was great to see everyone and catch up on things, and for some of us it was 35 years worth. Many of you who weren’t able to make it have spoken with or e-mailed me in recent weeks. And with the profiles you sent in, I realize that we were and continue to be the “class of action.” Back in the sixties we transformed PSC from a suitcase college to an active campus. And since that time you have reached out and touched the minds and hearts of thousands. It’s been years, but we have gone from our freshman beanies to being the establishment of our communities. It has been a journey. Joan Cook has an idea to carry this forward, to create a scholarship fund, so that some young person who might otherwise not be able to attend PSU can be given a chance. We may change a life.

Susan Cornwell Robbins received her master’s in varying exceptionalities from the University of South Florida in 2001. Susan currently teaches special education in Stokes County, north of Winston-Salem, N.C.. She says the area is very similar to New Hampshire but not nearly as cold. Fran Tishkevich wrote, “The past year has been quite eventful (both good and bad.) In May 2003 my oldest son, Joe Gorgol, graduated from Norwich with highest honors. He was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy and is currently serving aboard the USS John McCain … This fall I was hired as the calculus and stats teacher at Merrimack Valley High School in Penacook, N.H. It’s interesting going back to high school after many years in higher education (the past 10 years at Notre Dame College in Manchester) I am pursuing my Ed.D. degree in math education… And the bad part, in January my youngest son, David Gorgol, died in a snowmobile accident in Jefferson, N.H.” Our condolences to Fran. Don Sweet has recently been awarded a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. It’s the fulfillment of a 30-odd-year-old dream that began on the lawn in front of Mary Lyon Hall. His wife, Patrice; four children, Jeffrey, Diana, Lindsay and Alyson; mother, Thelma Nelson; and a lifelong friend, Ben Szreders, from Uncasville, Conn., attended graduation in Ft.
