2005 Graduate Distinguished Teacher for MBA: Colleen Brickley
Colleen Brickley was named Graduate Distinguished Teacher for PSU’s Master of Business Administration program for 2005. Says Professor Daniel P. Moore, chair of the business department, “Colleen is amazing in her ability to present concepts. … Regardless of a student’s learning style, Colleen can and does teach to them.”
Brickley holds a B.A. in mathematics with honors from the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. and a master’s degree in economics from UNH. Brickley joined the Plymouth State business faculty in 1993. From 1998 to 2001, she served as director of the MBA program. Brickley’s research interests range from applied microeconomics and statistical analysis to women and the economy. She was appointed by the governor to the State of New Hampshire Equalization Standards Board as the public representative with statistical expertise. —Marcia L. Santore
Distinguished Teacher for 2005: Leonard R. Reitsma
Dr. Leonard R. Reitsma, professor of zoology and chair of Plymouth State University’s new department of biological sciences was named Distinguished Teacher for 2005. Reitsma is highly respected by colleagues and students alike, not only in the biology program but across campus. Reitsma’s specialty areas are conservation, vertebrate ecology and behavior, and avian ecology. He holds a B.S. from William Paterson College and a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College, both in biological sciences. He joined the Plymouth State faculty in 1992, and now studies migrant warblers in Puerto Rico and New Hampshire.
Reitsma’s teaching philosophy is simple: “My teaching is characterized by trying to do science with my students, hence the appeal of field courses like the ones I teach in Africa and Puerto Rico. For more classroom-bound classes, I try to elicit participation from students. And I like to tell stories from my own experience that are relevant to a particular topic or concept. I believe students learn well by understanding examples that illustrate concepts.”—Marcia L. Santore
2005 Graduate Distinguished Teacher for M.Ed.: Marianne True
Dr. Marianne MacCarthy True was named Graduate Distinguished Teacher for Plymouth State University’s Master of Education program for 2005. True received her B.A. in secondary English education at Boston College and her M.Ed. in administration from Plymouth State, later returning for her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS), and finishing her Ed.D. in educational leadership at the University of Sarasota. In 1989, she was named New Hampshire Teacher of the Year for her work at Inter-Lakes Junior and Senior High School. In 2003, she received a New Hampshire Excellence in Education Award (“EDie”) for her instrumental role in the founding of PSU’s student chapter of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
Since 1999, when she joined the Plymouth State faculty, True has made many contributions to the University’s graduate programs in education—as coordinator for the educational leadership program, as editor of the New Hampshire Journal of Education, by contributing to the institution’s recognition by our accrediting bodies, and developing and maintaining a network of school administrators throughout the state of New Hampshire, which extends their PSU experience into their professional lives. —Marcia L.
