Peter J. Thurber ’04G received the Nancy Beyer Opler Award for Excellence in Advising at Colby-Sawyer College’s 2006 Commencement ceremony. A faculty member in the exercise and sport sciences (ESS) department and assistant athletic trainer for athletics, Thurber has taught a variety of courses in Colby-Sawyer’s athletic training program and advises about a dozen ESS majors each semester.
In their recommendations, students cited Thurber’s generosity with his time, attention to individuals’ needs and respect for students’ decision-making skills. “If you need help or advice about the major or graduate school, he will always give his two cents,” wrote one student. “Pete knows that everyone is different, and he helps you based on you, and what you want, not what others did or want you to do.” Another student noted that Thurber always makes time in his schedule for his advisees. “Peter has never forced a decision on me and has always been there to listen to whatever I have to say. He will always help you see both sides of a story, which makes it easier to come to a decision.”
Thurber holds a B.S. from the University of New Hampshire and an M.Ed. from Plymouth State University.
