Every spring, PSU presents awards for excellence in teaching and service to the University community to an undergraduate faculty member, a
graduate faculty member and now, for the first time, an adjunct faculty member. Nominations for these honors come from faculty and staff as
well as students and alumni.
The distinguished teachers for 2007 are Gary Goodnough, professor of counselor education; Chris Chabot, professor of biology; and Jack Barry, adjunct professor of mathematics.

Distinguished Graduate Teaching Award

Gary E. Goodnough
Gary Goodnough has dedicated his career to helping others, first in public schools as a teacher, guidance counselor, and director of guidance, and for the past 12 years as a member of the faculty in Counselor Education and School Psychology programs at PSU.

Since coming to PSU in 1995, Goodnough has helped elevate the profile of the University in the fields of counselor education and school psychology. Most recently, he helped secure accreditation for the Master of Education in Counselor Education, School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling concentrations from the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), making PSU’s the only nationally accredited counseling program in New Hampshire.

In addition to teaching and advising students in the College of Graduate Studies, Goodnough is a licensed mental health counselor practicing at the Counseling and Human Relations Center at PSU and has had over 25 articles published in professional counseling journals.—Kevin D. Anderson

Distinguished Teaching Award

Christopher Chabot
During his 15 years at PSU, biology Professor Christopher Chabot has fostered the intellectual curiosity of his students. Chabot joined the PSU biology department as assistant professor in 1992 after earning his PhD at the University of Virginia.
For Chabot, learning is a journey of discovery that he helps his students navigate and enjoy. In his classes, students learn more than science; they learn the critical thinking skills necessary to expand their understanding of the world around them.

Chabot’s areas of research are animal behavior, neurobiology, and animal physiology. Over the years, he has collaborated with dozens of undergraduate students on research projects, many of which have lead to presentations at regional and national scientific conferences.—Kevin D. Anderson

John “Jack” Barry
Adjunct Faculty

Lifelong mathematics enthusiast John “Jack” Barry is the first recipient of the Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award. Not only does Barry teach at Plymouth, he also holds three PSU degrees: his bachelor’s and master’s in mathematics education, and a certificate of advanced graduate studies in curriculum and instruction.
For nearly 20 years, Barry has enriched the educational experience of thousands of students at PSU. Prior to this, he taught high school mathematics in Wolfeboro and Weare. Throughout his career, Barry has striven to connect with all of his students, especially those who may lack confidence in their mathematical ability, or feel anxious based on their past experience in math classes.
Among his achievements at PSU is the founding and continued leadership of the Math Activities Center, where students experiencing difficulty in their math studies can receive peer tutoring from mathematics education majors. It is a program that benefits not only the students in need of tutoring, but also the mathematics education majors, who gain invaluable teaching experience.—Kevin D. Anderson
