In their first varsity-level season, the Panther cheerleaders have already made their mark nationally, turning in a stellar performance at the 2007 Cheer Ltd Open College National Championships in Myrtle Beach, SC in March.
The Panthers placed second in the Medium (13-20 members) Collegiate All-Girl Division and received the second highest score among all college teams, including several co-ed teams. The event was judged on team performance, including jumps, stunts, tumbling, vocals, and overall crowd appeal.
“Our girls were amazing,” said PSU head coach Carrie Kiley. “The crowd loved them. They really did well and I’m very proud of them.”
Plymouth State has had a cheerleading team for years, and several years ago cheerleading became an affiliate member of the athletic program. In February 2006, the sport was elevated to varsity status effective with the 2006–2007 season.
