The Common Man Apprentice Competition is a delicious blend of marketing, entrepreneurship, and excellent taste.
Created by business professor Bonnie Bechard in 2006, the competition challenges teams of students to create a tantalizing ice cream flavor, then make decisions on product, price, promotion, and presentation.
The theme of the latest competition, held last November at the Common Man in Plymouth, was Integrated Clusters, inspired by PSU’s move to a new academic model.
Each team created a dessert that represented one of the seven clusters at PSU: Education, Democracy, and Social Change; Tourism, Environment, and Sustainable Development; Justice and Security; Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Exploration and Discovery; Health and Human Enrichment; and Arts and Technologies.
Not only is the competition educational and fun, it also has a philanthropic component. Each year, the money raised from admission fees is donated to the Common Man/PSU Apprentice Scholarship Fund.
