2012-2013 Exhibition: Karl Drerup Art Gallery

Each year, PSU art faculty show their finest current work in the opening exhibition of the Karl Drerup Art Gallery. This exhibit is especially important to the educational mission of the art department as the work on display sets a standard for the students throughout the year. Diversity of approaches, both formal and conceptual, variety of media and their usage, personal and societal thematic statements, and fine craftsmanship demonstrate the gamut of faculty involvement in their respective disciplines.

 

October 2–27
Tom Blackwell:
Metaphorical Paintings

Tom Blackwell is best known for many series of paintings that deal with contemporary subjects such as urban storefronts, reflective window surfaces, motorcycles, and specialty aircraft, executed in a hyper-realistic approach in oil paint. The series in this exhibit features “metaphorical paintings,” touching on the greater issues of life.

 

November 6–December 14
History and Techniques of Printmaking

On display for the first time at PSU are works by Durer, Hiroshige, Goya, Kollwitz, Piranesi, Christo, and Miro, among others in this wonderful teaching collection. The exhibit is a historical overview of the varieties of methods, techniques, and styles produced by artists from 1500 to the present. Technical examples of work include woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, engravings, and serigraphs. The collection, owned by painter and teacher George Burk, is curated by George’s son, art historian Efram Burk.

Women’s Caucus for Art,
Members’ Juried Exhibition

An exploration of women’s primal and instinctive ferocity, a source of deep power and protectiveness. The Karl Drerup Art Gallery and the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA), New Hampshire chapter, presents artwork by WCA artists addressing questions of women’s wild strength: when, how, and why do we access our feelings of our inner wild animal? How does our current culture embrace/reject ferocity in women? Juror: Saisha M. Grayson, Assistant Curator, Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum.

Opening reception Tuesday February 5, 4:00-7:00, with remarks by Dr. Saisha Grayson, juror.

April 2–20
Juried Student Exhibition

Each year, the campus looks forward to the annual student exhibition as an example of high achievement at PSU. Students from all art department program levels and disciplines share the outcomes of their progress in education, training, and refinement in art making. Works on display include many styles and conceptual approaches, ranging from drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics to printmaking, photography, and design.

April 30–May 14
Bachelor of Fine Arts Studio Exhibition

The BFA degree in studio art is for students interested in careers as practicing artists. During the senior thesis year, students develop a body of work through which they explore a personal range of themes, individual style, techniques, or processes. A committee of art faculty guides each student’s artistic progress, which culminates in the selection of work featured in this annual year-end exhibition.
