Mountain Voices | Weather in the Whites: The Region’s Unique Microclimates and Forecasting Winter Weather

December 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

FREE

The White Mountains are home to some of the most dynamic winter weather on the plant. From Mount Washington’s record wind to a US 24-hour snowfall record, the Whites play host to unique and fun microclimates. Join me in the discussion on the world record wind, upslope snow, a 200-mph gust on Cannon, and the hazards every hiker and back country skier should know about.  Advances in forecasting are helping folks who recreate in the mountains become more weather aware. We’ll outline how mountain forecasting is improving, and where the science is heading in the coming years.

Charlie Lopresti is the Chief Meteorologist at CBS13 and FOX23 in Portland, ME. His meteorology journey began here at Plymouth State. After graduation, Charlie went to work atop New England’s highest peak, at the Mount Washington Observatory. As Staff Meteorologist he had the unique opportunity to observe, forecast, and conduct important research in “The World’s Worst Weather.” His early broadcast jobs brought him to WVII ABC7 in Bangor, and WLNE ABC6 in Providence.

Charlie has been awarded the American Meteorological Society seal of approval for quality television weather broadcasts. He has also been designated Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the AMS. His forecast was awarded Best Weathercast 7 times by Maine Association of Broadcasters. In addition, his weathercast also won first place by the Maine Associated Press Broadcasters Association.

When not in the News 13 weather office, you can usually find him, his wife Morningstar, their daughters Catherine and Maris, and dog Buddy doing something fun outdoors. He enjoys skiing, trail running, hiking in the Whites, and growing giant pumpkins.
