Celebrating all levels of student art making at PSU 

Welcome to EMERGING: Annual PSU Student Juried Art Exhibition! This exhibition celebrates the multitude of talent, work, and passion of PSU student artists and the total spectrum of PSU’s Art program.

How the Exhibition Works

Every year, all students are invited to submit their best work, no matter where they are in their development. The external jurors are asked to make selections from each “level” which correspond to the courses for which the artworks were created. Level “A” signifies work in first year, beginner classes, and “Level D” signifies the most advance class work. A special “Level E” is for work made independent of any classes. The artworks have been selected by jurors who are unfamiliar with the students and their current work. One artwork at each level has been selected by the jurors as the “Best in Level”, and one artwork was selected as the overall “Best in Show.”

Meet our 2021 Jurors

Kim Bernard creates sculpture that is recycled, kinetic, interactive, public and involves the community. She creates installations upcycled out of trash and is currently focusing on transforming plastic waste into sculpture using her portable recycling machines. She shows her work nationally and has been invited to participate in many exhibits, some of which include the Portland Museum of Art, Currier Museum of Art, Fuller Craft Museum, Harvard University, Art Complex Museum and UNH Museum of Art. Her work has been reviewed in the Boston Globe, Art News and Art New England. Bernard is the recipient of the Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant, Kindling Fund Grant, NEFA grant and several Maine Arts Commission Grants. She was an artist-in-residence in the Physics Department at Harvard University and at the University of New England. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in 1987 and her MFA from Mass Art in 2010. Bernard mentors emerging artists individually and teaches professional development to artists nationally.

Samantha Cataldo is curator of contemporary art at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she organizes exhibitions, stewards the postmodern and contemporary collections, and manages artist programs. She is founding curator of the Currier Museum’s Artist-in-Residence program (est. 2018). Recent and upcoming exhibitions include Ethan Murrow: Hauling (2018–2019), We Are For Freedoms (2019–2020), Critical Cartography: Larissa Fassler in Manchester (2020), and Alexandria Smith: Memoirs of a Ghost Girlhood, A Black Girl’s Window (2021).
