Topography, 3D Art, and the N.H. 4000 Foot Club: A Lecture with Demonstration

Climbing all the 4000 foot mountains in NH is a goal for many hikers in the Granite State. Learn how an interest in hiking, orienteering, map making, and teaching topography culminated in a collection of painted 3D models of all the 48 mountains on one of NH’s favorite hiking bucket lists. Plus, see how these incredible 3D models are made! 

Mark Thomas is a retired middle school science teacher. An avid hiker who has hiked all 48 of the 4000 footers, Thomas uses his knowledge of map making to build 3D topographic maps that combine science, art, and hiking. He was the recipient of the 1999 Christa McAuliffe Sabbatical Award, and created curriculum and resources for teaching Orienteering and Mapping skills to NH students.
