Annual Plymouth State University Student Juried Art Exhibit – 2018

Location: Museum of the White Mountains, Main Gallery

Highlighting the strength, energy, passion, and technical skill of our PSU art students, this annual exhibition features the best efforts of students from all levels of art making. Through exploration and experimentation inside and outside the classroom, this exhibition includes a wide variety of media from drawing, painting, photography, and video to graphic design, sculpture, and mixed media.

Jong-Yoon Kim: Light, Form, and Material

Location: Silver Center for the Arts, Lobby Gallery

Jong-Yoon Kim takes his precision paper folding into the world of function. From paper to wood, PSU’s Jong-Yoon Kim creates impossible and compelling spaces in his practical and impractical sculptures, lighting the way to inspired design.

Forest to Forest: Bicknell’s Thrush

Location: Museum of the White Mountains, Main Gallery

Date: January 30, 2018 - February 21, 2018

Opening Reception: January 30, 5-7pm

The Bicknell’s Thrush, a rare bird that breeds in the White Mountains inspired this multi-year, multiphase international cluster project and interdisciplinary exhibit. This exhibit examines issues like land management, deforestation, New Hampshire tourism, economic development, gender studies, and international environmental, social, and political impact. PSU students have been involved in the project, interacting with key partners, and developing effective conservation advocacy initiatives related to this special bird.

How does the human connection motivate and enrich art making? Conversations, relationships, and ideas shared in various ways become significant influences of inspiration within the artistic process. For this exhibit, we asked art faculty members to reflect on the relationships that have resonated with them and how they are reflected within their own work. Who inspires you? Sources of Inspiration shines a light on the current and exceptional art being made by PSU Art Faculty members

Vanishing Act: Endangered Species

Location: Silver Center for the Arts, Lobby Gallery

Date: November 6, 2017 - December 15, 2017

Opening Reception: November 16, 5:30-7pm

Plymouth State University’s Art and Environment First Year Seminar students explore the power of art to inspire activism. Students researched various endangered animal species and created an accompanying art installation. Keeping in mind that the exhibit as well as the artworks can bridge understanding and raise awareness, students worked with Museum of the White Mountains staff to design, plan, and install Vanishing Act.

Lasting Impressions: A Juried Alumni Arts Exhibition

Location: Museum of the White Mountains, Main Gallery; Silver Center for the Arts, Lobby Gallery; Lamson Library

Lasting Impressions showcases multiple generations of PSC/ PSU art, writing, music, theater, and dance alumni, highlighting the importance of place as well as the University’s history of incubating critical thinking and artistry.

Summer Camps: The White Mountains Roots of an Iconic American Experience

Location: Museum of the White Mountains, Main Gallery

Date: May 3, 2017 - September 13, 2017

Our Summer Camps exhibition traces the sparks cast by the Transcendentalists and the early White Mountain tourists. They were the kindling for the first American summer camps that caught fire along the shores of Squam Lake and became the popular camps of the Progressive Era. These led to the torches carried forth by generations of campers from then to now.

Forecasting: Climate Change and Water Impact

Location: Museum of the White Mountains, Main Gallery

Date: January 23, 2017 - April 21, 2017

Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 1, 2017

This exhibit explores climate change overlapping the lens of scientific information with artistic imagery and expression, inviting the viewer to engage in the material via contemporary art installations and scientific data concerning oceans of the world, waterways, atmosphere, and drought. This interdisciplinary experience highlights the power of combining different critical thinking pathways to deepen understanding of climate change’s relevance to the individual.

Finding Place on Paper: Contemporary Poets and Printmakers Explore the White Mountains

Location: Museum of the White Mountains, Main Gallery

Date: October 24, 2016 - December 16, 2016

This exhibit pairs contemporary professional New England regional poets and printmakers with Plymouth State University student work with the common theme of responding to the White Mountains as a place.

Taking the Lead: Women and the White Mountains

Using art, first hand accounts, clothing, and photographs, this exhibit explores the role women played and continue to play in shaping and popularizing the White Mountain region.
