Aroma Duo

Please join us for the first of our Thursday evening “Silver Chamber Series” concerts featuring The Aroma Duo. Pianist Tianhong Yang & Cellist Johnny Mok will perform music by Liszt, Schnittke, and Piazzolla.  The concert will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024, in the Smith Recital Hall at the Silver Center for the Arts and will feature the newly rebuilt Steinway D Concert Grand. 

Johnny Mok, a Boston-based Cellist, Performing Artist, and Teacher, was born in Hong Kong, China. Mok performs regularly across the United States, and he is an active teacher and a highly sought-after cellist in the US. He was a prizewinner in several competitions including, CICA International Competition, Birmingham Music Club Scholarship Competition, and American String Teacher Association Music Competition in the Junior and Senior Division, etc. As a result of these achievements, Mok had appeared as soloist and featured cellist with orchestras and concert venues across the US. Mok is also an active
chamber musician, and had been invited as Guest Artist at the Orvieto Musica Chamber Music Festival in Orvieto, Italy.
In April 2011, Mok made his first major soloist debut at the Popejoy Hall, Albuquerque, NM, performing the great Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor, under the direction of Gabriel Gordon. At the age of twenty, Mok won the position of Section Cello with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, spawning his first professional orchestra debut. In 2015, Mok performed Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, under the baton of Blake Richardson, as the first prize winner of Camilla Huxford Competition. In 2022, Mok performed Tchaikovsky’s Variation on a theme of Rococo with the New Hampshire Philharmonic.
Mok was invited to perform in numerous international cello festivals in his solo career, such as Verao Classico in Portugal in 2022 and 2023, Rencontres Musicales de Noyers in France, and Istanbul International Chamber Music Festival in Turkey. In recent years, Mok founded the Aroma Duo with his piano partner, Tianhong Yang. Together they have been actively performing in various Chamber Music Series and venues across the US and the world including their most recent appearance in Carnegie Hall, and their Asia debut in Macau. Dr.Mok currently serves the Adjunct Cello Faculty at the Middlesex Community College and Saint Anselm College.

Pianist Tianhong Yang is highly acclaimed in the world of classical music for her exceptional technique, profound artistic insight, and outstanding stage performances. As an internationally renowned artist, Yang has achieved top honors in several major international piano competitions, including first prizes at the Liege International Piano Competition in Belgium, the Antonio Bertolini International Competition in
Milan, Italy, and the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA) Competition. She has performed in many prestigious venues across Europe and America, including Carnegie Hall in New York, USA; DeSingel in Antwerp, Belgium; BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff, UK; and Auditorio Sony in Madrid, Spain.
Embracing her role as a diverse musician of the 21st century, Yang actively promotes contemporary music throughout her career. As co-founders of Aroma Duo, Tianhong Yang and Johnny Mok work closely with composers to present their latest works, aiming to enlighten and inspire audiences with fresh perspectives. Aroma Duo has performed chamber music by contemporary composers from diverse backgrounds, including Chinese composer Zhang Haofu based in Belgium, Turkish composer Fazil Say, and Afghan composer Arson Fahim. Aroma Duo has been featured as guest artists in numerous chamber music series, such as the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra, Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, and Macau Alternative Music Festival. Yang continues to tour globally as a solo pianist and actively engages in chamber music with musicians from varied cultural backgrounds, exploring diverse musical styles and performance approaches.
Currently, Dr. Yang serves as piano faculty at Plymouth State University and Saint Anselm’s College.
