Faculty Recital: Hannah Murray & Justin McCarthy, “The World in Her Hands; music of contemporary female composers”

“The World in Her Hands; music of contemporary female composers,” is a celebration of songs in many American musical traditions including music theater, cabaret, jazz, and spirituals. Featured composers include Georgia Stitt, Goldrich & Heisler, Christine Jobson and Margaret Bonds.
Hannah Bio
Hannah Murray, lyric soprano, received her B.A. in vocal performance from Connecticut College, and her M.M. in vocal pedagogy and performance from Westminster Choir College. Additional studies include the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, and Middlebury College’s Deutsch fur Sängerin program. A highly sought-after voice teacher, Mrs. Murray’s students have gone on to sing at some of the nation’s leading Schools of Music, such as Boston Conservatory, Elon, the Tisch school at NYU and Yale, and have also sung on national musical theater tours, and off and on Broadway.
An accomplished singer in her own right, Mrs. Murray has performed throughout the Northeastern United States. She has been a soloist for The Lakes Region Symphony, The Nashua Symphony, The Concord Community Chorus, The Walker Lecture Series, The Paul Madore Chorale, The Opera Circle, The Keiser Concert Series at St. Paul’s School, and the Musicians of Wall Street Series at Concord Community Music School, amongst others. This season (2023-2024), she is touring with her colleague, pianist Justin McCarthy, performing a solo recital entitled “The World in Her Hands: songs of contemporary female composers”.
Mrs. Murray is thrilled to be on the full-time faculty at Plymouth State University as the Coordinator of Vocal Studies, Teaching Faculty. In addition to her administrative and private teaching duties, she serves as Music Director for the Plymouth State University Musicals and teaches music and voice-related classes there.
Formerly, she held the position of Voice and Choral Department Chair at Concord Community Music School, Adjunct Lecturer of Music at St. Anselm College, spent three years as Music Director at South Congregational Church, and recently served on the board of the Boston Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, where she held the position of Director of Boston Student NATS (SNATS). Mrs. Murray is a resident of Concord, NH, and is the mother of two, Grace and Caroline.
Justin Bio
Justin McCarthy has worked as a pianist & educator in the greater Boston area for over 20 years. A faculty member at Plymouth State University (NH) since 2009, Justin currently serves as Coordinator of Collaborative Piano in the Department of Music, Theatre, & Dance.
Justin has given recitals in New York, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Ireland, and the Czech Republic. As conductor, his recent productions have included Into the Woods, The Addams Family, Mary Poppins, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Wedding Singer, Jacques Brel, Sister Act, Godspell, Little Women, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, and Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld. Dr. McCarthy’s “Piano Meditations” is published by GIA Publications, Inc.
Recently, Justin has appeared in recital with violinist Elliott Markow, clarinetist Stephanie Ratte Jenkins, and sopranos Hannah Murray & Emily Jaworski.
Justin received his Bachelor & Master’s degrees from Rice University, and his Doctorate from Boston University. His teachers have included Paul Cooper, Robert Roux, Phyllis Moss, Ellsworth Milburn, Bruce MacCombie, and Lukas Foss. Dr. McCarthy has performed in master classes with Richard Goode & Abbey Simon and coached with John Perry.
Justin is currently the Music Director and Organist at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Bedford, NH. Justin also serves as pianist for the Nashua Choral Society and maintains an active teaching studio at the Manchester Community Music School. He lives in Southern NH with his wife and 3 children
