PSU Music Presents: Symphonic Band and Chamber Winds Concert

Join us for the first PSU Symphonic Band concert of the year. The performance features Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band. Written in 1911, this piece has been a staple of the wind band repertoire for over 100 years. The band will also present Celestial Seas, a musical depiction of the eventual collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies. John Zdechlik’s “Chorale and Shaker Dance” weaves the familiar Shaker tune “Simple Gifts” with a lyrical opening chorale, with the two themes finally appearing together at the climax of the piece. Eric Whitacre’s “October” reflects the colder days and subtle melancholy of the season, and Alton Adams’ “The Governor’s Own” is a rousing march composed by the first African American bandmaster of the United States Navy.
