Rhapsody in Blue: Symphonic Band Concert

Please join the Plymouth State University Symphonic Band for the first concert of the academic year. The centerpiece of the concert will be a performance in celebration of the one-hundredth anniversary of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, featuring PSU piano faculty Tianhong Yang. The Rhapsody was composed for dance band leader Paul Whiteman’s “Experiment in Modern Music,” a concert that sought to “elevate” jazz through symphonic arrangements. The wind version performed here seeks to revisit the smaller chamber music qualities of the original version performed by the Whiteman orchestra.
In addition, the band will also feature William Bolcom’s “Graceful Ghost Rag”, “Spritual?” by Don Gillis, and “Strange Humors” by John Mackey.
