Spring Fling artist booked, election timeline announced: PSSS roundup 3/25/24

Plymouth State University has booked a Spring Fling artist, Student Senate advisor Melina Baker-Murphy announced at March 25’s PSSS meeting. PSU has not finalized contracts with the artist, but students should expect an announcement soon. “Trust me, I’m getting gray hair about it too,” Baker-Murphy said. 

Spring Fling, for which PSU has allocated $131,460, will feature a student opener (the winner of the “Battle of the Bands” contest) and DJ aftershow in addition to the live artist. The Plymouth Activities Council for Students (PACS) will host the concert on April 27. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, March 30, according to an email from Student Life director Jessica Dutille.

Provost Nathaniel Bowditch said he also anticipates PSU will announce its commencement speaker by the end of the week. The school is waiting for their advertising agency to finalize the speaker’s bio, he said.

PSSS Speaker William Loughlin announced the timeline for year-end student government elections. Students will receive nomination forms on Wednesday, March 27, Loughlin said. All positions, including those currently occupied, will be available. Nominations will remain open through Wednesday, April 3. Students can vote April 8 through April 12. PSSS will announce the winners within 48 hours of voting’s close, Loughlin said.

Class councils met and shared plans for events. Class council events are “the backbone for getting students engaged,” Loughlin said. The class councils have yet to hold any events this year.

 The class of 2025 is planning three events, ‘25 Vice President Lexia Stanley said: a flower “planting event,” tie-dying, and a “May the Fourth BBQ” Star-Wars event. Class of 2026 President Christyan Cimino announced plans for a “color run,” where students can throw “$1,200 worth of environmentally-friendly colored powder” at participants, who will wear white clothing. The Class of 2027 will host a “Sunday Sundae” ice cream social, ‘27 Treasurer Skylar Hammes said. The event may include a photo booth, she added.

The freshman, sophomore, and junior class councils are allocated $2,000, $4,000, $6,000 per year, respectively. None of the class council allocations have been spent yet, according to a March 25 Student Organization Balance Report. Baker-Murphy suggested councils with extra money purchase stickers. “Stickers are always a great option,” she said.

PSSS meets on Mondays at 7:00 pm in the HUB Student Senate Room. Their meetings are also live-streamed on Zoom.
