Lattes with a Lawyer is an event held by the Criminal Justice Organization (CJO) that was inspired by Coffee with a Cop, an event that was held in the fall semester. Lattes with a Lawyer was on February 21st from 1 to 3 pm at the Student Center room in the HUB. The idea of Lattes with a Lawyer was to appeal to not just criminal justice majors but other majors as well. The goal was to help students broaden their horizons career-wise. This goal was successful because it reached many different students from all different majors. At the event, all the students that made connections with the lawyers present and they all discussed their futures, and how they deal with the law.
In attendance were Professor Mark Fischler, Professor Lara Saffo, Stephen Harris who is an associate attorney at McLane Middleton’s Trusts and Estates, as well as Kaci McCorkell who is an associate attorney at Morrison Mahoney. Kaci also is responsible for liability defense.
Professor Fischler is a former public defender and is the current chair of the CJO. He worked from 1997 to 2001 and he loved his job however he had a spiritual awakening where he realized he should be a teacher. Fischler enjoyed that Lattes with lawyers gave students a great way in building bridges and connections with not only teachers but also lawyers. His favorite part is building relationships with students and providing insights.
The CJO is planning many events including Ice Cream with Infantry, a mock PT test event, a mock oral board (interview for a future job), and the career fair.
The career fair will be held on April 13th from 10 to 2 in the HUB Courtroom. The agencies that have been confirmed that will be attending are the US Forest, Federal Correctional Institution Berlin, US Secret Service, the FBI’s Boston branch, Social Security’s Concord branch, NH Department of Corrections, NH State Police, NH Fish and Game, NH Marine Patrol, Maine DHHS, Belknap County Restorative Justice, police departments from Manchester, Nashua, Laconia, and Methuen, NH Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, Voices Against Violence, Case In Point, and Mount Prospect Academy. The CJO has been a work in progress since the fall.
