Plymouth State women’s field hockey welcomes non-conference opponent Thomas College to campus. PSU came in with an overall record of 6-3 with a 1-1 record in the Little Eastern Conference and the visiting Thomas College came in with a 6-6 overall record and a 1-0 record in the North Atlantic Conference.
To start, Thomas College was on the attack in the offensive zone the majority of the quarter. Early on, both goalies of Antonucci and Toner shined with some excellent saves. Plymouth’s defensive trio of Couture, Freni, and Lord had a nice first quarter in front of their goalie Antonucci. Thomas College had some opportunities to strike first on the scoreboard from corners and fast breaks but were ultimately unsuccessful. However, Antonucci was an absolute beast saving eleven shots.
In the second period, Athena Comeau used her track-like speed in setting up opportunities for the offense. Comeau was injured mid-way into the quarter and did not return until after halftime. Thomas College was able to find the back of the net, getting on the board first credit to junior Julia Reny.
After a quick halftime speech, the third quarter was underway. Thomas College netted their second goal of the game past Antonucci. Plymouth’s offense was again finding opportunities, but Toner and the entire Terriers’ defense were brickwalls. Later on in the quarter, Reny notched a hat-trick in the contest.
Fourth quarter came around and Plymouth finally got on the board with Healey notching her 12th goal of the year. Plymouth’s offense was hungry for another goal, but Healey’s goal would unfortunately be the only one scored for Plymouth. Once again they were down but showed some heart and fight in the game. In this final quarter, Reny tallied her fourth goal of the game with the final score being four to one in favor of Thomas College.
Coming up for the Panthers, they will travel to an out of conference opponent in UMaine Farmington on Saturday October 14th for a 1pm start.
Coach Molly Saunders said about the game plan for Thomas college, “It’s a Non-conference game, so we worked on a few new things and didn’t put them all together out there”
