Plymouth State University (PSU) is incredibly fortunate to be home to so many amazing clubs and student organizations. During these unprecedented times when students have been cooped up in their dorms, unable to gather in person, these clubs and orgs have been a vital outlet for connecting once more with peers and equally as important, the professional world outside of campus. The Sports Management Club at PSU is one such club that, even in these difficult times, has excelled in ensuring its members stay connected and prepared for life after PSU.
Under the leadership of PSU Senior Jake “Iggy” Ignaszewski, a Sports Management Major himself, the club has taken the initiative to host its very own “Work in Sports: Career Pathways in Sports Management” Career Panel. This is a virtual event that will feature PSU alumni currently working in Sports Management as well as other professionals in the industry. For Jake, putting on this event is about helping his club members “match to people in the industry who can give them the roadmap on how they became successful.” As well as helping students establish “direct connections with people who can help them live their dream.” Even if you are not considering a career in Sports Management its simply a good opportunity to hear from successful, driven alumni on what it takes to succeed! You can sign up for this virtual event, which is being held on March 24th from 4-6 PM, on Handshake or contact Jake at jbignaszewski@plymouth.edu.
Although these types of events are normally a once a semester thing, having guest speakers come to meetings individually is nothing new for the Sports Management club. Jake is always looking to bring in PSU alumni who can uniquely relate to the students in the club and talk with them about that future beyond PSU. Jake mentions one speaker who graduated from PSU in 2019, worked for the Red Sox and then, because of COVID 19, had to start networking, job hunting and connecting all over again. It gave the members of the club, as Jake put it, an important “view of what the industry looks like, outside of what you would learn in a classroom.” Another speaker, one who has done broadcasting with ESPN and NESN, took the time to go around the virtual room and talk with each member of the club individually, asking them “what’s your dream? What are you doing to get there?” and finally offering advice based on his own experiences in the Sports Industry. One could say that Jake’s goal of providing the club with speakers that bring their own unique experiences to the forefront and show a willingness to help students in the Sports Management club broaden their horizons has most certainly helped his members see further!
In addition to hosting guest speakers, career panels, and club meetings. Jake, as the host of his very own Sports Podcast “Iggy Sports Talk” is also no stranger to volunteer work and putting in the extra time outside the classroom to set himself apart further down the road. It is clear that him bringing this mindset of working hard to achieve your dreams to the Sports Management club at PSU is just one of the many things that has kept this club growing and glowing!
Not to be outdone by its peers at UNH, the Plymouth State University (PSU) Sports Management Club will be hosting a “Work in Sports: Career Pathways in Sports Management” Career
