As for my 2023 resolution, I have decided that I want to read 50 books this year. In January, I read six books including The “Inheritance Games” trilogy, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. It is by far my favorite series I’ve read so far.
The first book in the trilogy is “The Inheritance Games”. this book follows Avery Grambs who was just a normal girl until a billionaire named Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves his entire fortune to her. Avery is expected to move into his mansion for a year to be able to fully get his inheritance since she is only seventeen when he passes. The Hawthorne mansion is full of secret passages, riddles, and puzzles. Yet the whole Hawthorne family is currently living in the mansion and was completely disinherited including his four grandsons. This book sets up the love triangle between Avery and two of the grandsons, Grayson and Jameson. Danger surrounds Avery and her newfound fortune and in order to survive she has to play Tobias’ games.
The second book in the trilogy is “The Hawthorne Legacy”, this book follows Avery as she questions if she even solved the mystery because, at this point, she has a lot more questions than answers. Avery is on the hunt for the one person who may have the answers she has been looking for. One question still remains, “why did Tobias leave his fortune to Avery and not his flesh and blood?”. As Grayson and Jameson continue to pull Avery in every which way, she is trying to figure out who wants her out of the picture and who is an ally. In a mansion that big, sometimes it’s hard to keep track.
The final book in the trilogy is “The Final Gambit”, this book follows the final weeks that Avery is supposed to live in the mansion. Dodging danger is just something that Avery has gotten used to since it’s almost been a year. Her only motivator? The Hawthorne brothers. Her life and theirs are so intertwined now. Everything was going very well until a visitor showed up and made everyone question everything. Then it was clear only one more puzzle remained. Good thing that there is nothing more that the Hawthornes love more than winning.
If you are going to read any series, it has to be this one. This book elicited so many emotions from within me. The suspense and tears I have cried while reading this book are only something you can get in movies. Barnes announced on January 25th that she will soon be releasing a short story that goes along with the trilogy. The short story is called, “The Brothers Hawthorne” and will be fully released in August 2023.
