English Education (M.Ed.)
English Education Header

This program is designed for students interested in obtaining New Hampshire Teacher Certification in English (grades 5–12). Graduates will be endorsed for certification in New Hampshire and fully qualified to teach English and language arts in grades 5–12. The program is designed to meet all New Hampshire and NCTE standards for the preparation of teachers of English and language arts as well as providing a background in the subject areas of literature, writing, and language at the graduate level.

Required college-level coursework or equivalent competencies (audit, portfolio, or exam): analyzing and interpreting literature and literary criticism; creative and non-fiction writing above composition level; study of language; study of grammar; completion of four upper-level literature courses; sign language, journalism, communications, or media; and completion of six credits in American literature, British literature, or humanities.

Requirements for certification may change, subject to changes made by the New Hampshire Department of Education (NHDOE). Teacher candidates can find the latest NHDOE standards at education.nh.gov/index.htm.

Passing PRAXIS II scores required before starting field experience

• Understand the cognitive processes and social factors that contribute to language development;
• Support adolescent readers' development of skills and knowledge related to word recognition, vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and reading comprehension;
• Support adolescent writers' development of skills and knowledge related to writing clear sentences, compelling narratives, creative poems, and coherent essays;
• Ask incisive questions that spark students' intellectual curiosity;
• Orchestrate lively, respectful class discussions that explore stories and poetry and relate literature to students' own lives;
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.

Requirements

The MEd in English Education requires the following materials to be submitted through our online application

  • Recommended 3.0 or better GPA in undergraduate coursework
  • Official transcripts from any/all college level work
  • Three professional recommendations
  • Current Resume
  • Statement of interest
  • NH Residency Verification form (NH residents only)

Deadlines

Students pursuing English Education can apply for admission to any of the upcoming semesters. Here are the annual application deadlines:

  • Fall semester – August 1
  • Spring semester – December
  • Summer semester – April 15
