Professional Interests

Brian has served as Director of the Office of Environmental Sustainability at Plymouth State University since 2010, and greatly enjoys the opportunity to work with students, faculty, and staff to improve Plymouth State University’s relationship with the environment. Brian’s primary areas of academic specialty are sustainability science and natural resource / environmental sociology, fields that study community in its largest sense by examining the interrelationships between society, culture and the environment. He has a strong background in social research methods, and an active and varied research agenda focusing on the interaction of environment and society including sustainability science, rural community change and development, community attachment and grassroots activism, wilderness values and perceptions, the evaluation of environmental education and conservation programs, outdoor recreation issues and management, and public opinion about environmental and natural resource issues. Brian and the others involved in sustainability efforts at PSU look forward to continuing our efforts to make the campus and the community more sustainable.
