Jenn Nelson joined the Math Department in the summer of 2019. She is an interdisciplinary mathematician and biologist. Since her undergraduate studies at Colby College, she has always kept one foot in each discipline. Graduate school at Duke University allowed her to combine them: her dissertation work in theoretical ecology used computer simulations and differential equations to explore population dynamics in a predator-prey system. For the last decade, her focus has been a long-term field study on a population of lady-slipper orchids in Connecticut. On the mathematics side, Jenn has explored the role of mathematics placement in student success. At Plymouth, her main area of teaching is college algebra and statistics, though calculus was her first love. When Jenn is not in the classroom, she is also a watercolor painter specializing in Asian-style brush painting.
