Prof. Couser (pronounced “COW – zer”) is a New Hampshire native, born and raised in Concord. He received a BA in Theater Studies from Yale University before going to New York, where he volunteered on theatrical productions and worked in marketing. He returned for an MDiv from Yale Divinity School, then studied for a Ph.D. in medieval history at Notre Dame. After a year of research in Munich at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica he defended a dissertation on the Christianization of Bavaria in the 8th century under the direction of Prof. Thomas F.X. Noble. He remained at Notre Dame for a postdoc in first-year academic advising and taught courses on medieval culture and the history of Christianity.

In 2007 he returned to New Hampshire and taught for several years as a lecturer in history at UNH and variously as a visiting assistant professor and adjunct instructor at Southern New Hampshire University, various Granite State University campuses, and at Plymouth State. In 2017 he joined the Plymouth State community as full-time Teaching Faculty.

Prof. Couser’s scholarly interests surround medieval European cultural and political history and the history of Christianity. His teaching offerings include general education courses on themes in ancient and medieval history, European history surveys, and upper-level seminars on topics ranging from Vikings to Crusades to the French Revolution.

Prof. Couser lives in Merrimack, NH, where his wife, Yvette, is Library Director.
