State of the Station

It is no secret that WPCR has been prominent in the college radio game for the past few decades. As technology has progressed at a rapid pace, radio has lagged behind. College radio stations have especially struggled to remain relevant due to less funding and visibility compared to commercial stations.

Due to the constant changing nature of the University System, WPCR has unfortunately suffered from insufficient funding and renovations over the past many years. The last substantial renovation took place in 2008-2009 which already makes the "new" equipment almost 15 years old. In today's fast-paced digital era, this would be considered vintage already. A lot of critical stage equipment in the station is also severely outdated. Currently, 84% of critical stage equipment is experiencing some sort of issue and the average age of the equipment is 27 years old.

Coming off the heels of the COVID-19 Pandemic, WPCR has a chance to re-invent itself and transform into a better, more modern station.

Utilizing a new budget, a stronger than ever student base and relentless advocacy, WPCR has one of the largest budgets for student organizations on campus. We have committed to rebuilding the station from the ground up! Check out the 'Renovations' article to learn what exciting things are in store.

Renovations

At the start of the 2022 fiscal year WPCR received 20,000 dollars in allocations from the PSU Student Government Association (SGA) alongside access to our NHPR partner fund. In total, WPCR had nearly 40,000 USD to work with for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. If you have already read the State of the Station report, it is apparent that WPCR is in need of some serious investments to keep us relevant and reliable in the digital streaming era. 

Here is a quick breakdown of what has been accomplished during the 2022-2023 capital project so far. More work is expected to start over Summer 2023 on the on-air and production studios. Both studios will be gutted and re-wired from the ground up.
