Environmental scholarship informed by the world with a regional focus and local engagement.

The Center for the Environment (CFE) at Plymouth State University addresses fundamental environmental issues in northern New England through scientific research, education, and collaboration. We engage on and off campus partners in projects using science-based knowledge to promote informed decision making. CFE provides future educators, researchers, and leaders with a comprehensive environmental education that includes real-world research experience, an understanding of how the natural and built environments are integrated, and knowledge of the community we live in and the economy in which we participate.

Our vision for the Center for the Environment, situated in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region at the gateway to the White Mountains, is to be a hub of expertise supporting local communities by applying regional environmental research to promote a sustainable future within the context of the global economy.

The Center was established at PSU in 2004 with the dual purpose of building research capacity on campus and providing the region with knowledge on environmental issues. Our specific objectives are to:

  • Prepare PSU students for lives and careers that demand a thorough understanding of human interactions with the natural, human, and built environment.
  • Contribute in major ways to the solution of significant environmental problems in our region.
  • Foster relations and encourage collaborative efforts within PSU and with environmental agencies and organizations.

The Center has a special commitment to the North Country and lakes region of New Hampshire and PSU is geographically well situated to serve this role. The work of the Center enhances the North Country economy, and fosters regional environmental understanding and literacy.
